(Third Ascent Alternative Route see blog)
I hiked Snowdon via the Watkin Path, ascending onto the South Ridge for the final push to the summit. This route felt noticeably more demanding than the more popular tracks, particularly due to the sustained elevation gain and the steeper, more technical terrain higher up. The lower section through woodland is relatively straightforward, but once the path opens up, the climb becomes more exposed and physically taxing. The South Ridge section requires careful footing and light scrambling in places, especially in wet conditions. Overall, this route offered a quieter, more rugged experience compared to the busier paths, with a stronger sense of progression and challenge throughout.
NOTE: The South Ridge section can be hazardous in poor weather due to loose rock and exposure. Good footwear and navigation are essential.
The Watkin Path is one of the most scenic and challenging routes on Snowdon, starting at a much lower elevation than other approaches. This results in a longer, more sustained climb. The route transitions from well-defined paths into steeper, looser terrain as you approach the South Ridge.
5-7 hours depending on chosen route.
The most common and easiest is The Llanberis Path, however the hardest route would be Crib Goch as it is classified as a Grade 1 scramble.
Late spring through early autumn.
